Description

Objectives
This WP aims to deliver services that serve the inventory of aquaculture farms, assessment of the socio-economic performance of human activities in aquatic environments and facilitate the management of their spatial distribution in environmentally sustainable ways, consistently with the Ecosystem Approach. This objective is met by developing an Aquaculture Atlas Generation (AAG) VRE and the Protected Areas Impact Maps (PAIM) VRE. These VREs will host applications serving a global community of users represented by FAO geospatial, aquaculture and fisheries, and statistics experts and/or national agencies specialized in aquaculture monitoring. The delivered VREs are expected to be ready to use, but also open and customizable environments.

Description of work and role of partners
FAO, ENG, CLS, GRID Arendal
The WP is divided in three technical tasks. The first task uses state-of-the-art earth observational data and ontologies to identify spatial structures related to aquaculture, and provides the assessment environment to produce an aquaculture atlas. The second uses a similar approach, but focuses on vegetation types and the integration of such EO derived data into spatial planning processes. A third task ensures that the WP is aligned with activities in other WP’s, and that new opportunities can be explored to prepare exploitation agreements.

The kickoff was attended by representatives from all involved partners.

The overall workplan was approved, the partners' expertise and expectations were presented, and the use of project tools and infrastructure were discussed.

  • CLS is finishing the 1st version of the vectorial data of shrimp pond farms in Sulawesi South (by next TCOM). This map will cover the last years with the newly launched S1 (from 2014 to now). Our intention is to produce a similar map using ENVISAT data (from 2002). We are now checking the availability of such old images over our test sites.

  • PAIM VRE will be launched Wed Nov. 8.

  • EMODNet Seabed Habitat now included in the VRE, can be analyzed in the Data Miner and visualized on the interactive map. We are working towards integrating analysis in the map of that data or in a different portlet.
  • New feature added to algorithm and interface that lets users upload and analyze their own polygons. (for example: planned MPA boundaries).
  • Cache mechanism for MPA reporting. Analysis that have already run are stored on the VRE with aunique ID and called back to interface when same or new user runs the same analysis. This increases speed (one or two seconds) instead of one minute. Also effective during poor internet connection.
  • GRID-Arendal attended 7th TCOM in France and presented latest updates to VRE and slides for final Brussels event.
