Description

Task Leader: I2S; Participants: UOA, NIORDSEAS / GRAMMOS / ALIEIA (subcontractors, on requirements analysis, data set provisioning, VRE evaluation, VRE exploitation).
It focuses on capturing and confronting the dual challenge of understanding (a) the performance of an aqua-farming operation, allowing on one hand investors and entrepreneurs to conform to environmental rules and optimize the use of resources (monetary and non-monetary ones) and (b) the pressure on investment and on environment produced by such operations, so that scientists and policy makers can craft guidelines or even regulations, taking into account the economic interest of those operations. To achieve the goal, a VRE is provided, granting aqua-farming sector entrepreneurs, investors, scientists and decision makers with access to: (a) open data combining performance, environment, regional and socio-economic datasets (b) a framework to support performance analysis and benchmarking and (c) a fundamental baseline set of indicators and models that provide the performance metrics in question.
The Task includes activities such as:
• Analysis of requirements of VRE stakeholders and detailed planning for its implementation;
• Identification of the appropriate data sets and data sources for supplying models and algorithms with required inputs, and bringing those onto the infrastructure via a variety of infrastructural means;
• Delivery of a number of tools by extending and revising existing platforms so that those comply with infrastructure needs and requirements and meet involved stakeholder needs.
In particular, the following components will be developed and integrated:
• A collaborative working environment allowing (a) enterprises to contribute and exploit anonymized data, for the evaluation of their performance and (b) scientists and policy makers to make informed decisions on research and regulatory challenges;
• A flexible assessment environment (methodology, s/w tool, data and operational resources) that allows involved aquatic farming SMEs to calculate and quantify their performance and benchmark this against other companies;
• A research environment allowing scientists to easily access published data sources and existing models and use them in their activity aiming at developing new models or fine tuning existing ones.
The following resources will be integrated and reused in order to provide the required capacity:
• Performance indicators’ definitions, e.g. Enon FCR, Bio FCR, GPD;
• Models and algorithms, e.g. fish growth curves, mortality-caused environmental pressure, cost breakdown approximation models, market penetration / competition estimation;
• Data sets: (a) environmental, oceanographic and other geospatial data products (EO, biodiversity, etc.), (b) anonymized enterprise performance data owned by the aquatic farms involved in the cases, (c) other public socioeconomical statistical data sets made widely available by local and international authorities;
• Dataset harmonization tools (alignment of geo-referencing and taxonomical identification, applying common reference systems for dataset metrics, etc.).
