Description

Objectives

This Work Package aims to deliver economic growth and environmental planning capacity-building instruments to confront modern science and economic analysis challenges, as identified by both scientists and aqua-farming industry/investors. This objectives is met by developing a Stock Assessment VRE and a Global Record of Stocks and Fisheries VRE.These VRES will allow for the first time to address in an integrated way the problem of global knowledge access, seamless data exchanges and reuse between aquaculture companies and its related stakeholders and will give new instruments to policy makers and scientists for supporting their research and informed decisions.
The technology developed in this WP will allow (a) companies to improve efficiency, increase profitability and do business in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way, enabling them to convert their operation data into knowledge (KPI indicators that are benchmarked to industry standards and supported by sensitivity analysis) and actionable results (b) researchers access datasets concerning the practices and performance of aquaculture producers, generating new knowledge and evaluating the practical indicators of aquafarming performance; (c) governments and environmental agencies to evaluate the current situation and define policies; (d) SMEs and academic institutes to provide training for executives and decision makers on the sector; (e) investors to efficiently take decisions using, for instance, multifactor evaluation approaches.
The delivering of these technologies will be done through a continuous development process in which: (i) detailed needs for related capacity-building instruments are collected and verified, (ii) service and data offerings is delivered, and (c) results and effectiveness of the instruments are validated.

September 2015 Activity

During September, partners involved in WP6 spent the first days of the month preparing for the kick off meeting.
New partners devoted some time familiarizing themselves with procedures, tools and the iMarine Gateway and services.

During the kick off meeting, the objectives of the tasks and of the entire Blue Economy pillar were presented as well as the roles and to objectives of the individual partners involved in the pillar. Background technology (AquaManager/Aquatracker from I2S and Geopolis from CITE) was presented as well as techniques that may be employed in order for the project to meet its challenges. The connection of WP6 with WP8 has also been the topic of discussion as the potential handing of simulation tools for Skill building can be a valuable contribution to WP8. Initial positions on data sets to be need and methods to be acquired and used were made by partners. Potential data confidentiality concerns, obstacles and solutions were presented. Discussion on technologies to be employed, as WP6 can have its own s/w production process and timeline, has been discussed. Initial approach is to use technologies close to the infrastructure (Java, R etc) yet, final decisions will be taken at later stages. Software licensing schemes have been discussed. The observation is that significant part of the software of the pillar will be released under a FOSS license, while free access to the services will be guaranteed by S/W providers. Potential commercialization opportunities/ benefits / objectives for SME partners of WP6 were also briefly mentioned. Finally a coarse timeline for Year 1 activities has been introduced, that will allow deliveries of fully operable software at about M12 of the project.

As a followup an internal WP6 meeting was scheduled and the time plan was further refined and presented to the WP partners. In preparation of the upcoming face-to-face meeting between UOA, CITE and I2S, existing technologies were evaluated, while a more focused survey of the technologies to be used and on datasets to be exploited was performed and classification criteria on aquaculture datasets as well as methodologies for calculating biological models were investigated.

October 2015 Activity

During October 2015 (M02) partners performed the following activities:

  • Elicitation of preliminary requirements for the VREs and internal services of the Blue Economy Pillar. Requirements raised try to cover both WP6 VRE's specific needs but also WP8 (Blue Skills needs) and will extend to other VREs.
  • Confronting significant challenges of the VRE implementation and adoption, such as the confidentiality issue for commercial-interest data sets and the computational complexity of its services. As a result initial concepts have been formed for anonymization (in general removal of information), parallelization etc
  • Surveying data providers and data sets and applicability w.r.t. technology, quality and licensing characteristics. The survey will continue in the upcoming period.
  • Deployment of infrastructure resources, mainly for experimentation on the feasibility of the various design concepts.
  • Partial conceptualization of solutions' design

Furthermore WP6 partners:

  • organized one internal formal meeting and several followup discussions on analyzing initial requirements and agreeing on process and a detailed short term plan
  • participated the Blue Commons meeting with the intention of understanding the core technology and facilitating its adoption
  • Submitted ideas on potential WP6 offerings to WP8 skills' building courses

April 2016 Activity

  • Continued internal support from WP leader to partners for technology and procedures adoption resulting a number of results (#2236, #1884)
  • Enhanced architecture of VRE #1 of the WP by further separating components/layers and utilizing infrastructure services.
  • Conducted a number of meetings (teleconferences and physical meetings) for identifying solutions to technological, scientific and organizational challenges, discussing topics such as status update, economic/financial aspects of aquaculture performance, exploiting ICRE8 models on social / environmental impact, MOU/contracts and Apache Spark employment challenges, further data needs, s/w integration and build etc (WP620160419Meeting, WP620160422Telco, WP620160422Meeting). A number of concrete outcomes and actions are results of the activity:

    • Additional data needed are needed and a number of alternative means for acquiring those have been evaluated (questionnaires, data inputs, price lists, statistics etc).
    • Technological integration solution (all benchmarking models will be Java-based so as to be reusable/portable from VRE to VRE)
    • VRE#1 "Global model" will cluster models by "quality" rather than the simpler initial "location" clusters. Several challenges are raised for clustering, to be resolved in the progress of the project. Initial models will refuse benchmarking in clusters where only one production model exists.
    • Essential aspects of economic models will be considered in evaluation rather than peripheral to aquaculture elements (e.g. feeding is the major cost element, while most infrastructure elements have limited impact in benchmarking).
  • Motivated and structured the creation of an MOU with ICRE8 and defined the concrete areas of collaboration (#3918).

  • Progressed in the signing of contracts with individual subcontractors, as planned by the DOA .

  • Progressed in the development of KPIs algoritms for benchmarking performance (Feed Conversion Rate ). The FCR has been published into Statistical Manager (#3889)

  • Progressed with the definition of the Techno-economic evaluation algorithm (#3485)

T6.1

  • I2S and UoA were represented and delivered a number of presentations in Blue Economy 2nd TCom workshop.

  • The usage of Database endpoint by the portal [Project Activities #2236] by I2S is ongoing, while troubleshooting of Liferay is also performed due to erroneous behaviour of the engine (liferay:searchContainer)
  • Launched the externalization of functionality from portlets to a RESTful service by I2S [Project Activity #4603] following UoA design suggestions.
  • I2S contributed to the simplification of techno-economic model, provided by CITE, for fitting aquaculture benchmarking needs and scope (#3485).
  • I2S validated the draft plan provided by UOA for task's interim deliveries until Oct 2016.

T6.2

  • UoA collaborated with CITE in the preparation of an early prototype demo of the Geoanalytics platform's front end, shown during the 2nd TCOM event in Heraklion.
  • UoA continued the development of the Geoanalytics platform's high performance back-end logic. (#1993, #1994)
  • UoA continued the development of the data access layer for the Geoanalytics platform (#1999) providing access to the early prototypes to CITE for integration with Geopolis.
  • UoA, CITE and I2S participated WP internal meetings.
  • UoA and CITE participated in call with CNR on the integration of the platform and datasets with the infrastructure (June 29th).
  • UoA and CITE prepared specialized material and participated to the 2nd TCOM meeting.

  • (CITE) concluded the specification gathering and design of a WMS importer plugin.
  • (CITE) started the refactoring of Geopolis project-management functionality to meet BlueBRIDGE's requirements (geonetworks integration, search etc).
  • (CITE) continued the development of Geopolis' front-end, where projects are being in progress of being incorporated.
  • (CITE) revised the technoeconomic model with the introduction of "submodels" or "reference sizing", in an attempt to address the scarcity of data in the financial sector. The solutions' feasibility will be validated in next period with feedback from aquafarm SMEs (via I2S).

Deviations and actions taken

  • (UOA) Departure of WP6 Deputy requires introduction of new senior person and training.

  • All partners collaborated on rearranging a number of tickets due to teams reorganization. The activity is to be continued.

  • Worked on integrating technoeconomic investment analysis components with the production models, implemented the provided by CITE techno-economic analysis model and integrated the resulting software (service and portlet) with the gCube infrastructure (UOA)
  • Complete the integration with IS by both the web-app and the analysis algorithm in order to use user's Home (workspace) and connect to infrastructure database end-point. Launched UI improvements, and prepared for gCube integration. (I2S)
  • Completed the first version of the RESTful service integrated with with IS and deployed SmartGears HostNode, hosting the service, for development purposes. Improved the data access process (Hibernate pool), launched an additional API in order to communicate with CITE components. (I2S)
  • Implemented the algorithms for KPIs estimation (FCR, SFR and Mortality Rate) using two methodologies (GAMs and MARS). Complete the integration by publishing into the Data Miner. (I2S)
