Summary of the discussions occurred during the KO meeting:

Main topics discussed in the WP3 presentation & in the Blue Uptake session:

  • The concept of Blue Uptake. By uptake we don't only mean to promote the services of BlueBRIDGE but also to stimulate their usage. This will be one of the major objectives of WP3.

  • Other specific objectives of WP3: Raising awareness of BlueBRIDGE & its offer; Creating an international, multi-disciplinary user base to showcase, offer & speed up the uptake of the services; Mobilizing & engaging key stakeholders; Providing high-level training on the BlueBRIDGE offer and Creating best practices for BlueBRIDGE knowledge transfer. Overall we can say that the focus of WP3 activities will be on 3 main areas: Promotion, Engagement, Education

  • The work of WP3 doesn't start from scratch - BlueBRIDGE can leverage on the iMarine community and the media channels identified during the iMarine project in which TRUST-IT had the same role of WP leader. Of course BLueBRIDGE addresses new communities such as aquaculture, economics, etc.for which different engagement activities need to be put in place;

  • Discussion on the main lessons learnt from iMarine that can be useful for BlueBRIDGE: a)Involving the main stakeholders of the marine field has been a success factor for iMarine. In BlueBRIDGE we will try to exploit the network of the EAB to actively engage relevant stakeholders; b) Friendly and easy to use communication instruments, such as mobile app, have a bigger impact, that's why the iMarine mobile app AppliFish will be promoted as well in BlueBRIDGE as a demo of the capabilities of the infrastructure underlying BlueBRIDGE and animated videos are planned; c) Targeted events are better than big dissemination conferences to engage key stakeholders: In BlueBRIDGE we plan 3 community workshops.

  • Potential risks for WP3 success: Identify the target stakeholders of an e-infrastructure is really difficult due to the broad range of services that an e-infrastructure can provide + Communicating clear messages is fundamental. Appropriate actions will be put in place to overcome these potential issues such as the creation of a common terminology, a stakeholder analysis, service cards including description of the services. This material will be useful to create target messages.

  • Presentation of a preliminary stakeholders analysis: direct users (scientists and data mangers)and primary stakeholders (SMEs, fisheries organisations, academic institutes, universities, industry, European clusters, govs and national agencies, policy makers and funding agencies)

  • Presentation of the BlueBRIDGE website (www.bluebridge-vres.eu) and collection of feedback
    from partners(go-live of the website during the kick off)

  • Overview presentation of the "Knowledge Transfer" activities that will be structured in 4 main phases: Training objectives & target audience definition, Training content production, Training delivery (suggestions for 2 f2f meetings - workshop co-located with the European Maritime Day, 18-20 May 2016, Finland - “boosting Blue Growth in Europe and worldwide”
    EUROPEAN MARITIME CLUSTERS + A dedicated f2f meeting targeting SMEs of the Pol Mer Bretagne Atlantique), Best practices

  • Description of WP3 participants & related effort - agreement on who does what in WP3

  • Presentation of major outputs: 7 Deliverables (D3.1: Communication & Stakeholder engagement plan, TRUST-IT, M5 (Jan 2016)+ D3.2: Best Practices – Interim Report, TRUST-IT, M12 (Aug 2016)+ D3.3: Training & Knowledge Transfer – Interim Report, FAO, M15 (Nov 2016)+ D3.4: Communication & Stakeholder engagement – Interim Report – TRUST-IT, M15 (Nov 2016) + D3.5: Best Practices & Socio economic impact – Final Report, TRUST-IT, M27(Nov 2017) + D3.6: Communication & Stakeholder engagement – Final Report – TRUST-IT, M30 (Feb 2018)+ D3.7: Training & Knowledge Transfer – Final Report, PMBret, M30 (Feb 2018)) and 5 Milestones (MS2 BlueBRIDGE WebPortal, TRUST-IT, M1 (Sep 2015)+ MS10 Stakeholder engagement workshops & post event reports, TRUST-IT, M9 (May 2016)+ MS12 eTraining web section & training programme delivery, TRUST-IT, M10 (June 2016)+ MS20 Stakeholder engagement workshops & post event reports, TRUST-IT, M18 (Feb 2017) + MS27 Stakeholder engagement workshops & post event reports, TRUST-IT, M28 (Dec 2017)

    • Joint RDA-Europe-BlueBRIDGE Datathon on Aquaculture & Fisheries (15-16 June 2017, Heraklion, Greece) http://www.bluebridge-vres.eu/events/rda-europe-bluebridge-datathon-fisheries-and-aquaculture-june-15-16-heraklion-crete-greece On 15 and 16 June 2017, more than 70 data enthusiasts came to Heraklion, Crete, to participate in the RDA Europe-BlueBRIDGE datathon for fisheries and aquaculture. The event was kindly hosted by the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (IMBBC/HCMR) and allowed participants to brainstorm on three main challenges: i) Developing a holistic approach to spatial planning for marine protected areas based on knowledge transfer and integration ii) Assessing new fisheries and aquaculture activities and mainstreaming environmental and socio-economic indicators iii) Incorporating socio-economic and environmental data in aquaculture assessment, strategic planning and performance analysis. After a first introductory session chaired by Yannis Ioannidis, President and Gen. Director, Athena RIC, and Professor of Informatics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, six initiatives, including EMODnet, the RDA Geospatial Interest Group and Fisheries Data Interoperability Working Group, LifeWatchGreece, the PHYSIS project and BlueBRIDGE presented their tools and datasets. Copernicus, EMODnet, BlueBRIDGE, FAO, Eurostat, Natura2000 were among the relevant datasets that were made accessible through the BlueBRIDGE e-infrastructure. The participants formed eight working teams, registered to the Virtual Research Environment set up by BlueBRIDGE for the datathon and started brainstorming how to exploit the datasets and the provided tools. On the second day, the working teams presented their idea to the Datathon evaluation committee. Three teams have been awarded. The Datathon was a unique occasion to stimulate an interesting debate on the different datasets and to fuel new thinking in the holistic analysis of satellite, environmental, biological and socio-economic data and the interactions between fisheries, aquaculture and the marine spatial planning. The datathon allowed BlueBRIDGE to strengthen the collaboration with the Research Data Alliance initiative and with EMODnet, the European Marine Observation and Data Network and to establish new synergies with LifeWatchGreece and the Physis project.The collaboration went a lot beyond as during the datathon preparation phase the different initiatives worked together to integrate their datasets in the BlueBRIDGE infrastructure. This work allowed BlueBRIDGE to enhance its offer and helped all the other initiatives to raise awareness to their data and services offer attracting new users. As a result of this work chemical and physical observed ocean variables (e.g. apparent and dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, mole concentration, salinity, silicate, and many more) from the Copernicus Marine Environmental Monitoring System, the World Ocean Atlas, and other international initiatives are accessible easily, either via standard protocols or via a portal, and with a unique account together with biological and ecological datasets distributed by the Global Biogeographic Information System and the Global Biodiversity Facility, scientific and technical information about the status of fish stocks and fisheries (covering more than 90% of the global fisheries activities world-wide), anonymised information about production and productivity of aquaculture companies. The spectrum of the datasets accessible is even larger thanks to the collaboration with EMODnet (bathymetric survey data, digital terrain model for European sea regions), FAOStat service (food and agriculture data for over 245 countries from 1961 to the most recent years), Eurostat (agricultural and economical indicators), Natura2000 (protected areas and habitats), EMODNET Seabed Habitat (classified habitat descriptors), World Database of Protected Areas (global spatial dataset of terrestrial and marine protected areas), and many others. All the Datathon presentations, Working team presentations and pictures are available online. A news has been already published http://www.bluebridge-vres.eu/news/rda-europe-bluebridge-datathon-fisheries-and-aquaculture-main-outcomes-and-datathon-material and included in the BlueBRIDGE July newsletter http://www.bluebridge-vres.eu/publications/newsletters/find-out-main-outcomes-rda-europe-bluebridge-datathon-did-you-miss-april. • The Open Science FAIR conference, 6-8 September 2017, Athens, hosted the second edition of the How FAIR friendly is your data catalogue? workshop. The first workshop was organised by BlueBRIDGE on 3 April 2017 in Barcelona co-located with the RDA Plenary Meeting. Here you can find the workshop post event report: download here (download a short ppt summarizing the workshop outcomes). All the participants believed that the workshop was very productive as it opened a constructive dialogue between different initiatives and countries. Such dialogue is fundamental to achieve consensus on a common vision on FAIR. This is why, some of the organisers and attendees participating in the EOSCpilot project, have therefore decided to organise the follow-up of the BlueBRIDGE Barcelona workshop within the Open Science Fair conference. Donatella Castelli, Research Director at CNR-ISTI (Italy) & BlueBRIDGE Project Coordinator, contributed to the workshop giving a sneak preview of the BlueBRIDGE Data Catalogue.
