Project Task #3139
Project WP #677: WP8 - Support Blue Skills: VREs Development [Months: 1-30]
T8.2 ICES Knowledge Bridging (Months:1-30)
|Status:||Closed||Start date:||Apr 05, 2016|
|Priority:||High||Due date:||May 02, 2016|
|Assignee:||Mike Drew||% Done:|
|Lead beneficiary:||6 - ICES||Participants:||6 - ICES|
Task Leader: ICES; Participants: IRD, CNR
It supports training and workshops for the communities targeted by ICES. The trainers prepare the training environment by first selecting the required resources from the data, models and other resources already made available in the D4Science infrastructure. Then they instantiate the corresponding service-based virtual environment that will be accessible through a dedicated user interface and adds other resources if necessary. This task also associates policies on users roles for the VRE (from VRE managers to users).
The Task mainly underpins training on stock assessment and fisheries monitoring through 8 thematic courses (cf. Table 5 in Part B).
Once developed, the VRE will be presented and offered to the ICES Expert Groups dealing with stock assessment and aquaculture. Expert Group Chairs will be encouraged to take advantage of the research and collaborative environments, use the new versatile (e.g. on operational, environmental and socio-economic aspects of mariculture) datasets and to report back to the ICES Secretariat.
The task will also take care of serving other exploitation opportunities for the built VRE which may arise from other projects and initiatives ICES is involved in.

Activity report January 2016
Plans have been made for a representative from ICES (Mike Drew) to be trained in the VRE, in the week of the 11 - 15 April.
A VRE has been generated for the first ICES training course on training in the R environment. So far, the instructors are reluctant to make use of the VRE, as they are happy with the hub that they have already been making use of on previous training occasions.
The VRE has been tested internally, and a procedure set up for how to grant access to the VRE for the course participants.

Activity report March 2016
Evaluation survey created online, on SharePoint, to evaluate the success of the use of the VRE for the ICES training course in the R environment. In future, a survey should be available on the VRE itself, to review the utility of the VRE. The results of the evaluation should be stored for reference and for future review.
Participants and instructors of the training course have been strongly encouraged to make use of the VRE for the course. However this is proving to be harder than expected. Therefore the results of the online review are limited.
Presentation of the Blue Bridge, and especially Blue Skills at a meeting at ICES HQ with the World Maritime University (WMU) based in Malmø, Sweden. The aim is to extend the reach of the training, and subsequent use of the VRE.
