In the context of the platform, a virtual layer is defined as a set of logical layers, referring conceptually to a specific physical measurement which in turn can be used as a parameter to a model. For example, a set of layers describing a specific environmental measurement and containing values for disjoint areas could define a virtual layer. This dataset could also be complemented with additional layers containing data for all areas but at lower resolutions.
In addition, a virtual layer contains additional configuration which will be exploited by the computational engine of the platform. Such configuration is the bounding box of the areas defined in each one of the underlying logical layers and default values that are to be used in case of absence at the level of the logical layers.
A sub-component of the platform needs to be developed. Its main tasks will be to interface with the virtual layer configuration's store within the infrastructure and provide an API for the management of virtual layers.
